Assimilation

Where I come from, almost everyone thinks that to make it in USA, you only need to come here. That money here is easy to get, and if you don't make it is because you do not want to make it. I found out is not so easy. I thought I had an advantage. I studied English in my home country for years. Bu I was so wrong. First, I found that, not only I could not understand what people was telling me, but that I could not communicated my ideas effectively. Kind of frustrating, specially when I was looking for a job. Watching TV only in English help me a lot. After a few months, I was able to understand better what people was telling me. I could speak a little bit better too. I felt more confident, and I decide to go out and look for a job. Many people speak my language here, and that was not very helpful for me. Is very comfortable to be able to speak with out any struggle.  If I wanna be able to move up, in any career, I need to dominate the language. when I was sure that my English was almost perfect, I learned that after almost a year in a English school, I have to eliminated my accent too. Because, people do care if you sound American or not when you speak. Assimilation is just not easy.
